What is it aiming for?
The central objective was to make complex information easy to understand, enjoyable to explore and memorable through interaction.
A child can learn about geological evolution, discover continents, solve a problem, interpret information, colour an illustration and make visual connections within the same learning experience.
The content is structured to encourage multiple forms of development, including:
-
Numerical and mathematical reasoning
-
Logical and analytical thinking
-
General knowledge and literacy
-
Observation and comprehension
-
Creativity and imagination
-
Critical and cognitive thinking
-
Independent exploration and curiosity
The larger design intention is to move from learning as consumption to learning as participation.
Context
Children are naturally curious about the world, but encyclopaedic knowledge can often feel distant, information-heavy and difficult to engage with.
Explore-O-Pedia is conceived to bridge that gap by transforming a traditional encyclopaedia into an interactive activity book. The five-book series takes children on a journey through the evolution of life and Earth, the seven continents, their landscapes, cultures and unique characteristics, while introducing knowledge through activities rather than passive reading.
My role was to approach the book not simply as an illustrated publication, but as a cognitive learning tool, where every visual and activity could contribute to learning engaging and fun.

Explore-O-Pedia,
An encyclopaedia rolled into a fun activity book!
Explore-O-Pedia is a series of five books that transforms complex ideas into easy to assimilate and fun hands-on learning experience. Designed around principles of perceptual and developmental psychology, the series combines information, illustration, puzzles, quizzes, problem-solving and creative activities to support numerical, logical, analytical and cognitive development.

Challenges
Information density
A large amount of educational content needed to fit within a format that remained approachable rather than overwhelming. Translating this volume of knowledge for children meant finding a balance between accuracy, simplicity and engagement.
Age-appropriate communication
Scientific and geographical concepts needed to be simplified without stripping away their meaning.
Cognitive engagement
The book needed to challenge children intellectually while remaining playful enough to sustain curiosity.
Visual consistency
Five books covering different subjects required a unified visual language while still allowing each topic to develop its own character.
Approaches
The project was approached through the intersection of information design, illustration, activity design and developmental thinking.
Complex → Accessible
Large concepts were broken down into smaller, digestible pieces of information. Instead of presenting knowledge as long blocks of text, information was distributed across activities, visual references, questions and discovery-based interactions.
Learn → Do → Remember
Activities were designed to create opportunities for children to process information rather than simply encounter it
Illustration as Participation
Illustration was deliberately kept open-ended in several parts of the book.
Blank and colourable illustrations allow children to complete, interpret and personalise the visual world of the book. Every completed page can therefore become different from the next, turning the child from a reader into a contributor.
Psychology-led Design
The visual and activity structure was informed by principles from perceptual psychology and developmental psychology, with the intention of making information easier to perceive, organise and assimilate.
The design considers hierarchy, visual grouping, repetition, recognition and progressive engagement to create a more intuitive learning journey.

Explore-O-Pedia became one of a kind five-book interactive activity book.
The final series brings together 400+ pages of knowledge and activities, covering the evolution of life and Earth and the world's seven continents, while ensuring the knowledge stays memorable with illustrations, fun activities and reflection exercises.
More importantly, the project establishes a different relationship between the child and educational content by making each page uniquely different on their own. At its core, Explore-O-Pedia is an exercise in translating complex knowledge into accessible visual experiences that make learning feel absolute engagement.
